Great Blizzard of '78

What do you remember about Great Blizzard? Come to the Main Library tomorrow, Saturday, January 26th, from 2-4, to hear about the storm from people who were in the thick of things.

As we've been sharing our stories, I've come to realize that I wasn't even here - I was at Penn State in Grad School! Classes were canceled the day after I got back; profs couldn't get to the campus. I think we had about 2' of snow. At some point during all this, I remember hearing that Ohio was closed. I wish I'd taken a picture of my car before I cleaned it off.

Olympic Oak Trees

Here's a picture of Olympic oak trees in Kreager Park. Although they're really English Oak trees, I call them Olympic Oaks, because they were grown from acorns I gathered from an oak planted at the Stadium in Gladbeck, Germany. In the 1936 Olympic Games, the gold medalists were given oak tree seedlings in addition to gold medals. This oak in Gladbeck was given to Willy Kaiser, the winner in the flyweight class boxing competition.

Shooting Range at New Haven High School

My brother-in-law was in town for his 45th high school reunion at New Haven High School. I was surprised to learn that the high school had a shooting range in the school under the gym. Would we even consider anything like that now?

Benefit for Maddie Zelt - Ed Fox Fish Fry

There's a benefit for Maddie Zelt, the 18-month old daughter of Chad & Kaia, who was born with a disease called Dejerine-Sottas, a form of Charcot-Marie-Tooth. This is a neuromuscular disorder that causes damage to the lining of the nerves. Maddie sees several therapists weekly, takes many trips to Riley Children's Hospital, is on a feeding tube, and has numerous special needs. Funds raised will help defray the expenses not covered by insurance.

In addition to an all-you-can-eat fish and chicken dinner on Sunday, October 21st from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, there will be a bake sale, a silent auction (which ends at 1:30), and a live auction (begins at 2:15). Location is St. Peter's Lutheran School, 7810 E. State Street, at the corner of State and Maysville.

Another chance to help Maddie is by getting your hair cut at Great Clips in Georgetown North on October 14th from 5:00 - 7:00 or until the last hair cut is complete. All proceeds will be donated to Maddie's fund.

Reservoir Park

When a patron asked for help finding information about Reservoir Park, I remembered the story my uncle told about how he lost his front teeth on the hill. One winter while he and his friends were sledding, his sled went over a bump, and when he landed, his mouth hit the cross piece (since he was lying face down on the sled). The teeth didn't survive the impact. Ouch!
